Wear Sunscreen

While that gorgeous brown skin of ours glistens in the sun, we need to make sure we protect it from the sun’s rays. Begin by incorporating sunscreen into your everyday life. Purchase a facial moisturizer with at least an SPF of 30. Additionally, cover your body in your favorite sunscreen. Find one that doesn’t leave a white residue, like the brand Black Girl Sunscreen. Just because we’ve got lots of melanin in our skin doesn’t mean it can’t get burned. So, we need to wear sunscreen.

In addition to protecting our skin from getting sunburned, sunscreen prevents us from developing skin cancer. It’s a myth that Black folks don’t need to wear sun protectant cream. While we may not burn easily or catch skin cancer as often as our white counterparts, it still happens. Black people simply tend to get diagnosed with skin cancer at a later stage because many do not wear sunscreen nor do regular skin checks for cancerous moles. Don’t be like this, sis. Put on the sunscreen. And protect your skin further by being proactive.

Make a yearly dermatology appointment to have your body checked for any possibly problematic moles. In the long run, wearing sunscreen on a daily basis will provide your melanin-rich skin with the extra protection it needs on your radical self-care journey. You’ll be keeping your body healthy by preventing skin cancer and other consequences of sun damage.
